Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never booked a Dude Ranch Vacation before. Can you please explain the basics?
Deposit: For groups under 20, a deposit equivalent to 30% of the total package price will secure your Dude vacation reservation. Groups of 20 or more, special packages, and retreats require a 50% non-refundable deposit.
Tax: A 3.7% sales tax will be applied to your bill at time of check-out.
Gratuity: Thank you for supporting our hard working team! Gratuities will range from 15-20% depending on the event.
Travel Insurance: If you’d like to purchase travel insurance, we recommend Travel Guard. Once you’ve secured your reservation with Sylvan Dale, you can then purchase insurance within a 2 week window. Insurance is recommended for groups of 10 or more.
Final Payment: Final payment is due at check-out but can be prepaid. We appreciate payment with personal check. We also accept American Express, Master Card, and Visa.
In Case of Cancellation: If you must cancel, we will refund the entire deposit less $100 per person if the cancellation is at least 90 days prior to planned arrival. If the cancellation happens within less than 90 days, we’ll discuss your options to either keep the deposit on file for a future stay, or if we can resell your space only retain $100 cancellation fee. For groups over 10, we highly recommend Travel Insurance through Travel Guard.
Check-in & Check-out Times: Our guests typically arrive on a Sunday and depart on a Friday or Saturday, depending on the week. Check-in is 3pm. Check-out is 10am. Guests must turn in their cabin keys at the end of the stay. They can either be brought directly to the front desk, or left in the room. If keys are not returned, we do have a $20/key replacement fee.
Do you allow smoking?: To assure you a safe and healthy stay, smoking/vaping is not permitted inside Ranch facilities or on the trail.
Do you allow alcoholic beverages?: Our liquor license does not permit personal beverages in public areas. You are, however, permitted to keep and consume your own alcoholic beverages in your accommodations. We do provide beer & wine service at dinner, for a small fee ($5-$6/glass of wine or bottle of beer - $21 per bottle of wine). You can just add it to your tab!
Do you allow pets?: If you choose to travel with your pet, we can accommodate them within some of our lodging units. We do have pets on the ranch — horses, cows, chickens, and dogs - and also wildlife and vehicles, so there will be some rules associated with bringing your four legged friend. All dogs must be on leash when outside the cabin. If you must leave your pet unattended in the cabin, we recommend a crate. If your pet isn’t accustomed to a crate, please leave the “do not disturb” placard on the door so that housekeeping will not enter. Pets are not allowed within the dining areas, or at the barn. We also ask that you pick up your doggie deposits please! No charge for week long vacation guests. If only staying for a night or two, there will be a $50 fee per day, per dog.
What are the laundry options?: Best to pack for the week! If needed, pick-up laundry service is available mid-week for a service fee of $17 plus $1.25/lb.
Does the ranch offer internet & wi-fi?: Although the Sylvan Dale experience allows you to escape distractions, we respect your need to “keep connected” with the world “beyond the ridge!” Complimentary wireless Internet is available throughout the main ranch grounds, including lodging rooms. However, the signal will not be strong enough to stream, so if you plan on watching movies from your device, make sure to download them prior to arrival!
Will I have cell phone service?: Cell phone service is patchy. Verizon has a strong signal in the Heritage; AT&T is a little trickier. One guest identified a post on our pasture fence with a great signal that also comes with a great view! But seriously, our Verizon cell phone booster provides three simultaneous lines of service. AT&T has good reception at our entry gate. When you’re hooked on to the wifi, you should be able to make calls using your provider’s wifi calling option. Our house phone in the lobby is available 24/7 with complimentary international or domestic long distance along with local calls.
What should I pack and wear? -
Personal Items: Toiletries, sun glasses, sun screen, curling iron, and don’t forget the camera!
What to Wear: Comfort is key! Casual clothing and comfortable footwear work best. Jeans, long and short sleeve shirts, tee shirts, swim suit, water shoes (if you plan to raft or tube the river). A hat and boots are a must. Some folks like to dress up for the Western Dance night. Be prepared by bringing a rain slicker/wind breaker for those occasional rainy rides. Riding helmets are available for use. Bicycle helmets are not approved for horseback riding!
What NOT to Bring: Cowboys travel light! If you don’t have boots and hat already, consider getting them after your arrive. We have hats for sale at the Sylvan Dale Gift Shop and boots to borrow from the Heart-J Saloon, although we cannot guarantee size and fit. We can also direct you to our local western store.
